Sweden hands its half-year EU-Council Presidency over to Spain – the beginning of a new era for the European Union
Sweden ends its half-year EU-Council Presidency. The second half of 2009 was marked by signs of recuperation after the global economic crisis, the adopting of measures at EU level and the continued preparations for the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon. The preparations gained fresh impetus from the positive outcome of the second referendum in Ireland in October. Significant progress has been made in the area of integration of the Western Balkans countries into the European Union. The most tangible result is certainly visa liberalisation that was implemented in December and applies to three countries in the region. This is a step closer to the fulfilment of the process that was started by the Republic of Slovenia during its presidency.
