Press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Serbia’s candidature for EU membership

The President of the Republic of Serbia, Boris Tadić, today submitted the application for EU membership to the Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeld, President of the EU Council. This is a crucial move in Serbia's efforts to join the EU, which also marks the official initiation of proceedings regarding membership. By submitting the application, Serbia has taken a third important step this month in the country’s integration with the EU, following the decision at the meeting of foreign ministers to begin implementing the Interim Agreement on Trade and the abolition of visa requirements to enter Schengen Member States on 19 December. Slovenia believes that Serbia will also meet the conditions for beginning the implementation of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement as soon as possible.
